AI Intern (Applied AI, LLMs, Agentic Workflows)

Job Description

At K&L Gates, we are looking for smart, imaginative and hard-working people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and ideas to join us.  Perhaps our search for talented visionaries and your search for important and impactful work lead to the same place.

We are seeking an AI Intern to support applied AI initiatives with a focus on Large Language Models (LLMs), agentic workflows, and AI-assisted automation. This internship offers hands-on experience building, evaluating, and iterating on AI-powered solutions that deliver practical outcomes in an enterprise environment. You will collaborate with AI developers, data and software teams, and business stakeholders to identify high-impact use cases, prototype solutions, and integrate AI capabilities into real workflows—while learning responsible AI, security, and governance practices.

This internship is designed for students who want real-world experience building and deploying AI solutions—not just studying them. As an AI Intern, you will help create and improve AI-driven capabilities such as LLM-based assistants, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflows, prompt/tool orchestration, and evaluation harnesses. You will also gain exposure to practical patterns for productionizing AI—like lightweight MLOps and integration with existing business systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prototype and improve AI-powered solutions that deliver practical outcomes in an enterprise environment.

  • Design and build AI models and algorithms; create and maintain machine learning models and AI-driven solutions.

  • Test, deploy, and manage AI systems throughout their lifecycle.

  • Support LLM experimentation, including prompting, tool/function calling, orchestration, and related workflows.

  • Contribute to vector search/embeddings and RAG pipelines (indexing, retrieval, relevance evaluation).

  • Help develop evaluation approaches (e.g., evaluation harnesses) to measure solution quality and reliability.

  • Develop AI solutions that integrate with existing business systems to improve functionality and user experience.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure AI initiatives align with organizational objectives.

  • Support data pipelines and infrastructure needed for efficient AI development and deployment.

  • Document technical work for both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Stay up to date with emerging AI trends and recommend enhancements to existing systems and workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field.

  • Foundational programming skills and strong analytical/problem-solving ability.

  • Understanding of core AI/ML concepts and familiarity with LLM capabilities and limitations.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and document technical work for technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)

  • Hands-on exposure to LLM frameworks or tooling.

  • Exposure to agentic patterns (tool calling/function calling, planning, memory, multi-agent collaboration).

  • Experience with vector search/embeddings and RAG pipelines.

  • Familiarity with common AI developer tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot or similar) and experimentation workflows.

  • Basic understanding of cloud platforms and APIs used to integrate AI services into applications.

What You’ll Learn / Be Exposed To

  • Building AI solutions from prototype to deployment, including testing and lifecycle management.

  • Practical applied AI patterns: LLM workflows, agentic patterns, RAG, and evaluation approaches.

Hourly Rate $20.00 / hour

The compensation salary for this position will be determined during the interview process and will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to prior experience, relevant expertise, current business needs, and market factors.
