The Senior Business Development Manager (BDM) will have primary responsibility for developing and executing strategic, operational and business development programs to support the firm’s Policy & Regulatory Practice Area and the Washington, DC office. •Maintain a strong knowledge of each practice/industry group, including business trends and competitive landscape for legal services. Develop and maintain personal connections in the business community to help in lead generation;
•Develop and implement practice-centric business development strategies, plans and budgets with practice leadership that are consistent with the firm’s strategic initiatives;
•Support group and individual lawyers’ business development efforts by identifying potential leads, collecting and sharing market and industry intelligence, representing the firm at networking events, tracking business development activity, and identifying professional and trade associations with which the practices might affiliate;
•Collaborate with lawyers to execute business development activities and plans, create practice area or industry specific collateral and content, develop campaigns and events, prepare RFP responses and proposals, create presentations, and maintain practice qualifications for new business;
•Monitor, analyze and develop insights from market trends, client data and lead generation activities and share these with practice leaders and other team members to inform and develop responsive marketing and prospecting strategies;
•Identify potential press opportunities, and collaborate with firmwide marketing staff to turn those opportunities into media exposure. Identify attorneys to be sources with key media contacts;
•Manage, mentor, and develop business development and marketing staff;
•Serve as a member of K&L Gates’ firm wide marketing team. Execute firmwide initiatives as assigned. Participate in special projects at the behest of the CMO;
Practice Management
•Support Practice Area Leaders to develop and execute data-driven operations and management strategies for the practice area and related groups;
•Work closely with the Finance team to compile and analyze data in order to generate reports on various practice area analytics (i.e. utilization, financials, etc.);
•Support Practice Area Leaders to develop and execute strategies to drive improved practice profitability and ROI tracking for strategic expansion, recruiting, business development investment, and other large-scale, practice-related initiatives; and
•Liaise with relevant firm-wide departments, including: 1) Marketing, 2) Information Technology Business Transformation Office; 2) Financial Services and Business Analysts; and 3) Library Services to keep abreast of current practice management technologies and software solutions, access and compile financial information, coordination and management of resources for the practice group.
QUALIFICATIONS:
•Minimum of eight years of marketing, business development and/or sales experience in public affairs, government relations or other professional services firm or closely related work environment. Experience within a large national or international firm preferred.
•Demonstrated knowledge of the business of public policy preferred.
•MBA or similar graduate-level degree preferred, but not required.
•Outstanding communications and analytical skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all levels. Demonstrated ability to influence senior professionals and help them succeed in meeting their business development objectives.
•Ability to work independently. Willingness to work hands-on to achieve objectives in an environment with little leverage.
•Outstanding project management skills and the ability to juggle competing, shifting priorities.
