K&L Gates seeks a Litigation Paralegal with profound trial experience to join the Pittsburgh office.  The Trial Litigation Paralegal assists lawyers, performing a variety of data management functions and trial preparation and support tasks.  The individual holding this position is responsible for building, updating, and maintaining trial databases in addition to presenting exhibits, videos, and demonstratives in trial seamlessly to enhance lawyers’ presentations and improve jurors’ understanding.  The candidate will have significant proven litigation experience and has demonstrated the ability to work under pressure and handle the high-stress environment of trial while being flexible, accurate, calm and professional.  This role will involve traveling to the relevant jurisdiction for court proceedings as needed.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS
Supervising partners, practice group chairs, lawyers, Director of Administration, Firmwide Director of Paralegals, Paralegal Manager, Practice Application and Solution Services Manager, paralegals, and external clients

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Leverage experience as litigation paralegal to support and advise trial teams as they prepare for and litigate matters up to and through trial and/or final hearing
• Provide litigation support, case analysis, exhibit tracking, and assist with managing witnesses throughout trials, mediations, arbitrations, focus groups, conferences, and other similar events in various jurisdictions

• Assist with creating and presenting PowerPoint demonstratives and summary exhibits for trials, mediations, arbitrations, focus groups, conferences, and other similar events
• Review, revise, process deposition designations, objections, and counters to coordinate exchange with other parties; accurately prepare and refine video clips for trial including: editing, synchronizing when necessary, exporting, delivery and/or play-back of finalized video clips in court-compatible formats; collaborate with trial teams to adjust clips based on evolving rulings and objections; troubleshoot technical issues during clip creation and during trial presentation

• Build, inventory, and present databases of trial exhibits, demonstratives, and deposition designations
• Facilitate logistics, pre-recording, and editing of presentations for virtual focus groups
• Build and operate equipment setup for trials, mediations, arbitrations, focus groups, conferences, and other similar events

• Traveling as necessary to support trial teams

• Assist with scheduling of projects requiring equipment rentals and trial presentation specialists

• Comfortable and conversant with litigation support tools (Nuix Discover, Relativity, Opus2, etc.)

• Provide daily operational support and administration of litigation databases

• Communicate with case teams and practice support teams regarding workflow, problems, and resolutions

• Coordinate with vendors and service providers for outside services, if necessary, following the firm’s procurement policies
• Develop and establish best practices, procedures, and systems associated with all responsibilities to aid in training and educating of colleagues and clients

• Create training documents and visual guides related to all aspects of trial presentation and logistics; train team members on same

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

• Maintains all administrative standards set by the firm, including the preparation and submittal of daily time entries, attendance at administrative meetings, tracking and properly storing client relevant/firm information, and other administrative tasks as assigned
• Communicates and enforces firm policies as necessary
• Supports senior colleagues to identify needs, develop solutions, engage with stakeholders and implement those solutions
• Provides input regarding hiring and performance reviews

• Understands the structure of the firm; understands the work of practice areas and shared services support groups

EXPERIENCE SKILLS REQUIRED
• College Degree preferred with at least 5 years of litigation paralegal experience

• Substantial trial experience
• Significant experience and dexterity with trial presentation software applications such as TrialDirector, OnCue, and/or Sanction

• Leadership and management skills
• Ability to follow detailed instruction and handle complex work
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and specific practice-group technology
• Must be able to produce accurate results
• Ability to anticipate, plan, and prioritize work while managing competing demands to meet deadlines
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to meet obligations with confidentiality, integrity, and sensitivity
• High attention to detail and the ability to follow up on assignments with little or no guidance from leadership
• Critical thinking skills sufficient to make independent decisions regarding daily work tasks
• Ability to bring problems, concerns, or discrepancies to the attention of the supervising lawyer
• Working knowledge of basic accounting principles and Excel
• Must be current in practice area industry trends and in the legal profession

ADDITIONAL ABILITIES REQUIRED
• In addition to the generic qualities and skills discussed above, candidates for practice area specific positions may require certain educational credentials and skills.  These candidates are expected to have academic expertise in the practice area of interest as well as the generic skills previously described.
• This job operates in an office setting and is largely sedentary, requiring the routine use of a computer and other standard office equipment.  The ability to open file cabinets, lift files, bend and stand on a stool may also be required.

 

Compensation Salary $96,000 - $161,000 / year 

The compensation salary for this position will be determined during the interview process and will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to prior experience, relevant expertise, current business needs, and market factors.
